The J-20, formerly referred to as J-14 or J-XX, is a heavyweight fifth generation fighter aircraft designed to counter the United States Air Force's F-22 Raptor. The People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) early plans were to deploy the new fighter aircraft in the 2018-2020 timeframe along with the single engine J-12 stealth aircraft. The twin-engine J-20 aircraft early variants were powered by two AL-31F (or 117S) turbofan engines and beginning in July 2020 it was replaced by the more advanced WS-10G engine. China plans call for the J-20 aircraft family to be powered by the 40,000-lb class thrust WS-15 engine beginning in 2024 or 2025.

The first pictures of the J-20 on the ground emerged from the Chinese Internet in late December 2010. Its maiden flight was conducted successfully on January 11, 2011. The aircraft seems to be far from production series with its development expected to last for one decade or two. Anyways, the existence of the J-20 stealth fighter proves China's commitment to become the next superpower challenging or replacing the United States of America. The aircraft achieved Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in 2017 and Full Operational Capability (FOC) in 2018-2019. The aircraft is fitted with an Active Electronic Scanned Array (AESA) radar capable of spotting a F-16-sized aircraft at distances of over 300 kilometers. The PLAAF may have fielded over 250 aircraft by 2023/2024.

The J-20B is a further evolution of the J-20 stealth aircraft with more advanced capabilities and powered by the WS-15 thrust vectoring control (TVC) engine with flat nozzles. The J-20B existence was revealed at the Zhuhai China Airshow in November 2018. At that point the aircraft was already under development. China may procure up to 48 J-20B stealth jets per year. The J-20B features a bulky rear canopy adding more room for fuel and/or avionics. The J-20B performed its maiden flight powered by WS-15 engines in December 2022. The J-20B may be fitted with an advanced radar system as well as state-of-the-art avionics. The new variant is expected to achieve Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in the 2025-2028 timeframe.

The J-20S is a twin-seater variant of the J-20 fifth generation aircraft initially powered by two WS-10 Taihang thrust vectoring control (TVC) engines. The J-20S performed its maiden flight in late August 2021 becoming the first twin-seat fifth generation aircraft. The aircraft mission remains uncertain but seems to be linked to the GJ-11 unmanned combat air vehicle operating as a sixth-generation aircraft. The serial production aircraft are expected to be powered by WS-15 engines adding supercruise and extended range compared with the J-20A aircraft. The J-20S should be fielded within the PLAAF in the 2025-2028 timeframe.
